The Armstrong Trail is a non-motorized recreational trail that is open to the public for walking, jogging, biking, and cross county skiing. The Armstrong Trail is currently developed to 15 miles by paved asphalt, crushed limestone, and crushed sandstone.
The southern end of the improved section of the Armstrong Trail begins in Rosston ¼ mile north of the PA Fish & Boat Commission Boat Launch and Parking Lot and travels into Ford City. The Armstrong Trail in Ford City is a paved asphalt surface and passes in-between the old PPG buildings and The Ford City Memorial Park.
Leaving Ford City and traveling towards Kittanning, the Armstrong Trail is a mixture of crushed limestone surface and local streets. In Kittanning, the Armstrong Trail travels past the Armstrong County Courthouse and Jail as well as many other historic buildings. The trail becomes a crushed limestone surface north of Kittanning and travels along the bank of the Allegheny River. The trail extends another 1.4 miles until being directed onto SR 1033 for one eighth of a mile by the mouth of Cowanshannock Creek.
Located by the mouth of Cowanshannock Creek is parking at the Bernard Snyder Picnic Area and Trail Head, Canfield-Holmes Sanctuary and the PA Fish & Boat Commission Boat Launch and Parking Lot. This location is a favorite fishing area for the many different fish in the Allegheny River and Cowanshannock Creek. This area is also an access point for the picturesque Cowanshannock Trail. From this location the trail has another 5.5 miles of newly developed trail of a crushed sandstone surface. The trail travels over Pine Creek, through the village of Mosgrove, past a parking area and trailhead at Lock & Dam 8, and along PA State Game lands 287 just south of Templeton. On this section of the trail there are many interesting things to see such as the Monticello Furnace that was built in the 1860s, Army Corps of Engineers Lock & Dam #8, and a small beaver dam with an impressive wetland.
The Armstrong Trail next trailhead is located at the PA Fish & Boat Commission Boat Launch and Parking Lot in Templeton. This improved section travels north for one mile to Mahoning Creek. The next trail improvement planned is to extend north of Mahoning Creek.
